The Research Center for Mechanics of Materials and Structural Safety - CEMSIG is a RTD (Research and Technical Development) unit of the "Politehnica" University of Timisoara, at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Department of Steel Structures and Structural Mechanics. The research center was established in 1999. In 2001 CEMSIG was qualified as Research Centre of Excellence by the National University Research Council (CNCSIS). In 2006 CEMSIG was again qualified as Research Centre of Excellence.
The center's mission addresses development and promoting of new technologies, expertise, technical assistance and education of highly qualified specialists in the field of mechanics of materials and structural safety. CEMSIG research center promotes cooperation at the national and international level and supports master and PhD studies. Through its experimental and computing facilities, the research center offers expertise and consulting services to industry.
The research area focuses on cold formed steel structures and performance of steel and composite structures under seismic action, fire and other natural and man-made hazards. New directions extend the area of expertise to seismic rehabilitation of existing buildings using new techniques and materials, as well high-performance materials for steel structures located in seismic regions.
